Each year, the World Services for the Blind Foundation selects a distinguished Arkansan with a personal commitment to community service to receive the prestigious Vision Award. This year, the WSB Foundation will honor Charles D. Morgan.

Blindness is no respecter of persons. It strikes without regard to race, religion, sex or nationality. In the United States, more than 25 million people age 18 and older are blind or have severe visual impairments that cause them to make adjustments in their careers and everyday living situations. The mission of World Services for the Blind (WSB) is to empower blind or visually impaired adults in the United States and around the world to achieve sustainable independence.

WSB was founded by Roy Kumpe in 1947 to serve blind or visually impaired people who needed to learn independent living skills or job training skills tailored to the special requirements of their individual visual impairments. The goal of WSB then, and today, is to empower blind or visually impaired adults to achieve sustainable independence through life skills, career training and community access. Since its birth, WSB has served more than 13,000 people from all 50 states and 58 countries.

Please join in supporting World Services for the Blind through your attendance at this luncheon on Wednesday, November 18, 11:30AM at the DoubleTree Hotel. For ticket information call them at 501.664.7100.

U.S. cybersecurity is demonstrating itself to be not just lacking but actually terrible.  We now know that the IRS database containing our personal information has been not just attacked, but penetrated.  Some 330,000 people (was it you … me?) have had their most private financial data handed over to some hacker. We may never know what they will do with it, but I suggest it will more than likely be used in identify theft.

Will someone please step up to the plate?

The Office of Management and Budget now says there have been two breaches, but either could be classed as the worst security breach in our country’s sad record of protecting us from the bad guys of the world.  Just one more piece of evidence that our government’s system of procuring and managing IT would get any CIO fired multiple times.  They should outsource it all, and why not to China since they have our data anyhow.  Think of all the billions we could save.

Take a look here. And here.

Salil Joshi, Ryan Guinee, Lukas Deem and Mike Steely have put their talents to good use by bringing the first-ever TEDx event to Litle Rock on July 24.  The all-day event includes four series of speakers with “ideas worth spreading,” followed by a dinner. TEDx will be held at the Ron Robinson Theater where, this April, I discussed my memoir Matters of Life and Data at the Arkansas Literary Festival. I’m honored to have been invited as one of the presenters for the inaugural TEDx here at home. Tickets went on sale today and they won’t last long with only 315 seats available. For ticket, spnosorship and volunteer information visit TEDx Markham St.

Skype-in in on The Hard Line

Prepping to skype with Ed Berliner, host of Newsmax TV’s “The Hard Line”

Late yesterday Emmy-winning Ed Berliner, host of Newsmax TV’s The Hard Line news talk show, invited me to weigh in on privacy and security.  Ed is a seasoned talking head, and the topic was the breaking news about the Office of Personnel Management’s announcement late yesterday afternoon that there had been a data breach in APRIL. Potentially 4 million people had their personally identifiable information compromised in this latest hack. For more on the topic click this link.

I have asked time and again, how can the Federal Government say “we have the tools to fight the hackers if we will just use” them when their own computers are being compromised at the Office of Personnel Management just this week? We need cyber security leadership from somewhere. If we don’t do something to beef up security of the internet, this will continue to happen and the sky is the limit on what these data bad guys can and will do.

I was the first guest on The Hard Line discussing this topic…if you would like to take a look click here to see the segment from June 4th. Thanks to Ed Berliner for the opportunity.

Berliner & Morgan
